Arm Cylidner, Bucket Cylinder and Boom Cylinder

Common Excavator Cylinders

  • Excavator Boom Cylinder

The boom cylinders are responsible for raising and lowering the entire boom. On larger excavators, there are typically two boom cylinders, one on each side of the boom.

  • Excavator Stick Cylinder

Also known as the arm, crowd, or dipper, the stick cylinder controls the movement of the dipper arm, moving it toward and away from the cab. This is often the largest cylinder on the excavator.

  • Excavator Bucket Cylinder

The bucket cylinder operates the bucket by curling it forward and backward. It is also known as the dump cylinder.

  • Swing Cylinder (Not Picture)

Swing cylinders are found only on mini and small excavators. They allow the entire boom to swing left and right.

  • Blade Cylinder (Not Picture)

Blade cylinders are typically present on small to medium excavators and control the lifting of a blade attachment up and down.
